Hey- my David is big into mountain biking and he has an REI brand that he really likes that was in about that price range. I can ask him for details or give you his email if you like

Considering you are soon to be a father, I would suggest taking that $600 and starting a college fund. Then when you do have time to hit the trails - which I would say would be somewhere around 2019 - you can buy yourself one of those fancy floating bikes - which you'll need since Lake Michigan will be at your doorstep. Note to self: invent a floating bike.

    NO !! dont do it!!
    1. Specialized, Giant, Trek, Gary Fisher, and just about every other non US made bike is made in China at the same factory.
They're all the same!!! I really can't tell the difference except for the stickers. And I've broken 3 Giants which were $2500 bikes. After they stopped replacing the frames, I stopped buying them. They rode like crap anyway.
    2. Everything Performance Bike sells is crap. They are the Guitar Center of bikes.

The best MTB frames in my opinion are made by Santa Cruz. A fully fitted Santa Cruz Chameleon should run you less than $650.
I've always had good experiences riding and working on santa cruz frames. Except for the one that got stolen. I'm still out for blood on that one.
Santa Cruz, Kona or Chris Carver. Those are my picks.
